SCHOOL COMMITTEE
BUS SERVICE PROBLEM. The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last night, there being present: Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Dennes (treasurer), W. Grigg, R. O’Neale, E. J. Galyer, H. Trotman, L. Huntley, W. Wiggins, and Mrs Knell (secretary). The headmaster, Mr S. C. Shedden, was in attendance. The visiting committee reported that during the holidays the following works had been completed:—(l) Alteration to windows in science room; (2) emergency exit door in main corridor; (3) top-dressing of asphalt area. It was decided ot write a letter of thanks to the Borough Council for having top-dressed the asphalt area, and also foi* having the swimming baths ready for the opening of the school. Miss I. Askew wrote resigning her position on the school staff. The secretary was instructed to thank Miss Askew for her services. Mr W. J. Wright wrote asking if any progress had been made in securing the diverting of the Matarawa school bus, so as to pick up the Ahikouka children. It was decided to forward the letter to the Education Board. The chairman stated that the board had not replied to the original request. It was understood that the bus contractor had been asked for a price for the alteration in the route. The headmaster reported that the Woodside children’s transport was at present unsatisfactory owing to the railway service restriction. This matter was also referred to the Wellington Education Board. The headmaster reported ~ that the number of children on the primary roll was 292, and on the secondary roll 45. Misses R. A. White, C. Bargh and R. A. Stone had joined the staff. Personal. Mr and Mrs Max Maddison and Mrs E. Maddison are spending a holiday at Nelson. TOWN HALL “THIS GUN FOR HIRE.” Tomorrow night there will be a double programme. “This Gun for Hire,” is a thrilling drama with Alan Ladd, a new star, Robert Preston, Veronica Lake and Laird Cregar in the chief roles. The associate feature is “The Heart of the Rio Grande,” a brilliant musical western drama featuring Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Fay McKenzie and Edith Fellows.
