CARTERTON
OUTBREAK OF FIRE SPLENDID WORK BY BRIGADE. a (“Times-Age” Special.) Just before 8 o’clock last night, an outbreak of fire occurred at the rear of Mr Lyndon Aplin’s chemist’s shop. Huge clouds of dense black smoke filled the air from burning boxes, straw, grass and a boarded fence. When the water was turned on from the main the pressure was so poor that had there been a stiff breeze blowing at the time there would probably have been little chance of saving the block of buildings up to the picture theatre. The brigade, in difficult circumstances, carried out their duties in an excellent manner, and are to be commended for having got the fire out so quickly. The “TimesAge” branch office had a narrow escape from destruction, and the eastern wall of the building was badly scorched. The cause of the fire is a mystery. Grass Fire. Yesterday afternoon a grass fire started on Mr T. Ray’s property at Clareville, and a ten-acre'paddock was burned black. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs K. Keall left today to spend a holiday at Otaki and Lower Hutt. Mrs R. B. Sayer, Dalefield, underwent a successful operation at the Greytown Hospital this week. Mr W. P. Foster (Carterton) has received advice that his son, Pte. W. P. (“Laddie”) Foster, is a prisoner of war in Germany.
