LIKELY TO BREAK

LULL AFTER CORAL SEA BATTLE ADDITIONS TO ALLIED AIR STRENGTH. NEW AND FAST AMERICAN BOMBERS. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, May 24. Some of America’s newest and fastest long-range bombers are now in operation against the enemy. Their speed is said to be comparable with that of the Zero fighter., Their range is 2000 miles, and they carry three tons of bombs. While comment is guarded, it is generally conceded that the lull following the Coral Sea battle is not likely to continue much longer. The need for still heavier air and naval strength is generally stressed. The “Daily Telegraph” in an editorial states: “We cannot feel secure in these waters till a big Anglo-American fleet regains absolute control of the south-west Pacific.” A Japanese report stated that a powerful American task force, including the carriers Hornet and Enterprise, this week was less, than 600 miles east of the Solomons.
