BITTER STRUGGLE
PROCEEDING IN LENINGRAD AREA ENEMY LOSING THOUSANDS OF MEN. FURTHER DRAIN ON RESERVES. LONDON, April 19. Although there is no appreciable change in the general position on the Russian front, reports of fighting indicate that the Russians are thrusting into enemy positions in the Leningrad area * and in the Karelian Isthmus. A bitter battle is raging in the Leningrad area and is costing the enemy thousands of men and the loss of much material.
The Germans are throwing into the battle men and material earmarked for the spring offensive. Two such divisions had already been annihilated. In the Karelian Isthmus the Russian drive continues against the Finnish defensive positions, though in some sectors minefields have slowed down the Russian advance. Fierce fighting is taking place. Soviet airmen are pounding at enemy aerodromes along the whole front. There is a marked absence of new types of German planes. German aircraft crews captured recently have been youthful and inexperienced.
