BV SMALL MERCHANTMAN FROM AUSTRALIA SHELL REACHES MAGAZINE OF UNDERWATER CRAFT. TRIUMPHANT SIGNAL MADE AT TABLE BAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CAPE TOWN, April 18. A small merchantman from Australia arrived in Table Bay flying the signal: "We have sunk an enemy submarine.” The crew reported that shots were exchanged and that the merchantman’s fourth reached its target, causing an upheaval of water and smoke. When the smoke cleared, there was no sign of the submarine, but half an hour later a heavy underwater explosion was heard. The crew believe that the last shot caused a fire in the submarine’s magazine, as a result of which the submarine exploded.
