BOWLING

WEEKEND GAMES SHIELD AND BOOTH CLIPS. I PARK CLUB RESULTS. An improvement in the weather saw the Masterton Park Bowling Club’s green fully occupied on Saturday, but the gusty wind in the early part of the afternoon, although having a drying effect and making the green keen, was at times rather troublesome. Even so. the bowls were drawing well on either hand. The main games were for the Booth Cup and Shield, in all of which particularly good bowling was witnessed. In the first Booth Cup game P. Trevorrow, B. Braggins, R. Wallace, H. Smith (s), defeated W. Campbell. A. Chapman. 0. Jones, H. Morton (s), 24/23, after a hard fought game. At the 10th end Smith was one ahead, and on the 11th Morton scored 5 but with his last bowl on the next end Smith moved the jack to lie 7, the board then reading 16/13 in his favour. Morton scored on the next four ends to lead 10/16, but a four on the 17th following by two singles gave Smith a lead of three. On the 20th end Morton scored four and was now one ahead, and when the skips left the head on the last end Morton was lying the shot with convenient short bowls on either hand. Smith’s first bowl went to the back and a running shot with his last took the kitty to the ditch to lie two and win the game. In the second game C. Leigh, R. Jenkins, E. Burke, R. Simpson (s) lost to W. Reid, J. Finlayson, G. Hayne, W. Christian (s), 14/25, in what proved another interesting game. There were only two or three points between the rinks until the 16th end, when the board read 13/14 in Christian’s favour. From then on Christian, occasionally trailing the jack, scored 11 to his opponent’s 1. Simpson scored on 10 of the 21 ends, but three 3’s and two 4's by Christian were too big a handicap. In the Shield game W. Davis, S. Lee, A. Kilgour (sub), J. Shearer (s), lost to S. Playsted, M. Reid, J. Hunter, A. Carstens (s), 14/26. In this game Hunter played good bowls, whilst Carstens was always accurate with his running shots.

During the past week the increasingly popular games for club trophies were continued. On Thursday E. Brown and H. Smith were unsuccessful in their challenge for the Ferns, being defeated by Trevorrow and Kilgour, 18/24. Up to the 19th end Smith maintained the lead, but a six by Kilgour came at the right moment. On Friday, O’Donnell and Jenkins, both of whom played exceptionally well, became the new holders, winning their game 21/12. By defeating G. Brown and Osborne 26/10, Gibson (Burke, sub.) and Carr retain the Mutrie Cup. Teams are required for two visits, viz., to Palmerston North on December 6, and to the Masterton Club at the next weekend. Nominations for the championship games are now being received.
