HOMING PIGEONS

MASTERTON CLUB RACE FROM WELLSFORD. FAST TIME RECORDED. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a race from Wellsford on Saturday. Out of the 18 birds liberated at 7 a.m. in fine weather. 14 were home by 2.20 p.m. The winning bird took 8 hours 12 minutes 19 seconds to fly the airline distance of 335 miles, being a speed of 42 miles per hour, which is the fastest time any bird has flown from Wellsford during the last six years. Only a few seconds separated the birds and the positions are as follow:— I. Mayes’s “Courageous,” 1203 yds. per minute, 1; W. Steer's “Nondescript, 1201yds. per minute, 2; W. J. Miller's “Dawn Patrol,” 1200yds. per minute, 3; I. Mayes’s “Miss Schilling,” 1199yds. per minute, 4; J. Mayes’s “On Time,” 1198.8yds. per minute, 5: E. J. Wicken's. “Blazealong,” 1198.2yd5. per minute, 6. This race was the second of three for the Nomination Rose Bowl. W. Miller and J. Mayes have scored 12 points each and A. Pinkney has 11. The deciding race will be from Opua (Auckland) a distance of 410 miles.

In the North points competition I. Mayes now leads with 31 points from J. Mayes, who has 21. The race next week will be from Christchurch, 232 miles.
