GRAND NATIONAL MEETING

STEEPLECHASE TO PADISHAH.

WINTER CUP WON BY CATALOGUE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. The outstanding feature of the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting at Riccarton today was the success of the favourite Padishah in the Grand National Steeplechase. Not only did he start the hottest favourite in the history of the race, so short in fact that his place price was some shillings better than his win dividend, but he was ridden to victory by an amateur rider, Mr G. G. Beatson. This is the first time an amateur has been successful in the National since Mr Martell won the first race ever Feld over the National country some 70 odd years ago. The crowd was not slow to appreciate the performance, and horse and rider received a great ovation on returning to scale.

This is Mr J. Hennah’s second Grand National Steeplechase, the previous one being Captain Jingle’s in 1912, but he won the Grand National Hurdles last year with Padishah. The weather was fine, though cold, and there was a very large attendance, including many North Islanders. The track was in excellent order. The totalisator handled £67,149 (win £29,189 10s, place £38,959 10s), an increase of £6,050 10s on the opening day last year. Results: — Trial Hurdles, ljm: 3/4 Araboa, 10.2 (T.
