RACING DESCRIBED

DAY FOR OUTSIDERS. Trial Hurdles. Araboa, who greatly impressed in - his first start ovei- the battens at Trens tham, scored a handsome win in the i Trial Hurdles. He was handy on the ! rails all day. Dividend, who was 1 favourite, went to the fore too soon J and in the run home did not have ? enough speed left to gain more than : third money. Lying well in the rear i for the first mile Chat came within > striking distance at the last jump and • hung on well to fill second berth. Jew- • ish Lad and Colonel French both ran • good races and should improve. Last t Link was with the leaders at the finish • but could not make the grade. I Paparua Handicap. Outsiders filled the places in the > Paparua Handicap. Paper Note, who crossed the line first, had her first race I since last August, when she ran at a s hunt meeting about two weeks ago, t and thus it can be understood why she >1 started at 10/12. After being near the front at the distance Paper Note came ■ on very strongly and Skyrena, who , made a great effort to get further up, “ was just held off. Tooley Street came ■ into the picture only over the last ) furlong after having worked over from ' No 18 at the barrier to the rails. Mittie ; and Strip were also well out at the barrier, but ran good races. Gay Chou 1 was near the front at the finish and was running on well. ; Jumpers’ Flat. Top weight for this event, King Rey, : pulled out into the lead with a mile ’ to go and looked like winning easily, but he was outstayed at the end by the third favourite Charade. In the early stages of the race Charade was a long way back, but she gradually 1 made up the ground and hung on to score an impressive win. Recollection, who filled third place, registered a 1 solid performance. Mount Vai. Pink Robe and Jewelled Girdle went well and appear to be in good form. Ellanui fell. Cashmere Plate. The favourite in the Cashmere Plate, Indian Sun, who drew No 19 position at the barrier, could only manage to fill third berth. Nigger Boy. who started well out at the barrier ran a wonderful race and won all the way. The second horse, Lord Midas, ran one of his best races to date, and after being handy stayed on much better than on other occasions. Not Out, Kaiwaka and Little Robin all registered good performances. Grand National Steeplechase. Firm favourite on both machines Padishah justified the confidence placed in him by the public and scored a fine win in the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase. Padishah was well ridden and over the first few fences he jumped very carefully. At the first half mile he was about 100

yards behind the leaders. Gold Wren and Cottingham displayed great dash and were flying over the jumps. Soon, however, a change took place. Cottingham was pulled up just as the first round was completed. Then Gold Wren, tiring badly, was out of the contest with a bad jump with about a mile and a half to go. At this stage Slayer was left a length a half in front of Padishah. Into the straight Padishah led from Erination and Slayer. Jumping the last fence like a champion the favourite went on to win by five lengths with Erination and Slayer battling for second honours. Erination held on to gain the decision by a length. Then followed Manawatu, 11 lengths away, followed by Tomcat. Enfield Steeplechase. Hanover, the favourite in the Enfield Steeplechase, was the only runner to complete the course without mishap. Hanover gave a fine display of jumping and except for a risky jump at the last he- would probably still have won even had the others all stood up. The only other horse who appeared likely to give trouble was El Caballo who was going strongly three lengths away at the second fence. Uncle Jim lost his rider at the stand double and Culverden fell at the next jump. At the second to last fence El Caballo and Red Terror came to grief, and Glenvane ran off leaving Hanover on his own. Glenvane got going again and finished 4J minutes behind the winner, with Culverden another three minutes away third. , Winter Cup.

For the third year in succession Catalogue annexed the Winter Cup. Handily placed all the way Catalogue ran past the leaders soon after entering the straight, and over the last furlong was always a winner. The second horse was Dictate who made a wonderful finishing run after being well back five furlongs from home. Lady Montana came home splendidly for third money. Trench Fight. Haughty Winner, Nightcalm, Alma and Majority all went well, but could not pace it with Catalogue.

Avonhead Handicap. With a brilliant finishing run Raana

scored a decisive win in the Avonhead Handicap. Never prominent until the end Raana overhauled the leaders 100 yards from the post and won running on. Lady Tinkle, the public's first pick, came home well on the inside but could not cope with the winner over the last dash. Battling on solidly Montessa ran into third to pay a handsome dividend. Brilliant Boa and Ohmaha ran well but weakened at the finish.
