The Inquest on Captain Cain.

TiuARU, Nov. 4. The morning [express brought the convict Hall from Lytteltou Gaol yesterday. As be was not expected to arrive before the evening train few people wen on the platform. Hall did not wear prison clothes, bat was clad iu a blue serge suit. He looked muob changed. Those who knew him in bis days of prosperity would not recognise in tbs close* cropped baug-dog looking man the gentleman who had moved in the best society of Titnanr Miss Houston, who nursed Captain Cain during his last illness, b«g been subposned as a witness, and will once more make her appearance iu Timaru Court, though in n more enviable position than when she was here last. At eight o’clock this morning the police proceeded to the cemetery for the purpose of exhuming the remains ol Captain Cam. The place was deserted, and nobody was present during the horrible ceremony, except the police representatives. The proceedings lasted exactly fifty minutes. The inquest was commenced at 11 before Mr J. S. Beswick, Coroner, before a jury ol six. who, after being sworn, proceeded to the cemetery to view the body. The polioe state that the inquest will last two days, and bn adjourned, as witnesses have to be brought from Melbourne, Wellington and probably England. Miss Houston left Christchurch by special train this morning.—Post oo t* respondent.
