THE PASTORAL SHOW

President, W C Buchanan ; Vice President, H R Bunny ; Treasurer, C Pharazyn ; Secretary, H H Welters; Auditor, F W R Seed ; General Committee, A Anderson, R R Armstrong, H H Beetham, W H Beetham, W B Bidwill, B Boys, H Braithwaite, W Booth, Jas Donald, B W Dorset, John Drummond, N Grace, Farquhar. Gray, A Matthews, Alex McKenzie, D McMaster, John Rayner, J Reynolds, J P Russell, J Stuckey ; Show Committee, A Anderson, R K Armstrong, W E Bidwill, W Booth, B Boys, H Braithwaite. E W Dorset, Jas Donald, Farquhar, Gray, N Grace, G Kimberley, A Matthews, John Rayner, J Reynolds, J Stuckey, J O Vallanoe Unlike former years, the Pastoral and Agricultmal Show at Carterton on Wedness * had the advantage of an exceptionally »“■’ , ••>8 the public of the Wairatapa fine day, a. " kv appearing in goodly took advantage of u .. * Lumbers. At about 3 u'cioea ... noon the secretary informed our represent live that 3250 people had gained admission at the gates, and that £l2O had been taken in gate money. The day was observed as a general holiday in the several townships, and jlwicg the day Carterton presented an ani-

mated appearance, owing to the constant stream of horses, vehicles, and foot passeu< gers that poured into it. The trains from Wellington brought up between two and three hundred persons. The ladies were present from all parts. This Show was in every respect well worthy of the important districts the Society represents, and as the stock all arrived on the Show ground early, there was the utmost good order and regularity, and the judges were allowed every facility to pursue their onerous duties. On the ground Mr E Buokeridge, the popular bonifaoe, conducted the sale of the stimulating beverages, and judging from the almost entire absence of inebriety, although Mr Buckeridge did a roaring trade, the quality of the liquor must have been of the best, ns the utmost order and good fellowship prevailed among both the total abstainers and those who “ take a little for the stomach’s sake.” Mr F. D. Felling, of Masterton, did a large trade in confectionery, Ac., and our old friend, Mr A. L. Whyte, entertained a large number to a good dinner, tea, Ac., in a capacious booth outside the gates. Mr Lewis, of Qreytown, erected a photographic apparatus on the ground and some mirthloving rustics bad their reflections taken in grotesque attitudes, much to the amusement of the bystanders. The Carterton Brass Band, under Mr Birrel, played some nice selections during the day and conduced much to the general enjoyment. There was a number of the Sports on the ground who offered to make fortunes instantaneously, but never upon any occasion allowed their customers to win anything, they were as usual freely patronised, bleeding numbers cf their superfluous coins. The police were well represented, but their services were nut required. In the horse department there was this year very creditable competition and the blood stock was a fair sample. In draughts there was an excellent show, and it must have been exceedingly difficult for the judges to discriminate as to which they should give the preference. In coaching stallions Mr Corlett's Rapid Roan, a horse admired by everyone, was the only competitor, and got a well merited first prize. Ponies were not in great force, but those that represented their class were well worthy of the recognition given them by the judges. In ladies’ backs, also light and heavy hacks, there were good entries and the competition was keen. There were 22 in light, ten in heavy, aud ten in ladies hacks. Mrs Buuny's Cloud took first prize in ladies’ hacks, and although some thought there were other entries quite as worthy, Cloud was a fine specimen. The ladies, without exception, in displaying their horses showed some good equestrianship, In light hacks Mr MeredithKay’s Secretary which took first prize, was universally admitted to be worthy of it. Mr Wood’s Blue Ribbon was a good second. Mr A McKenzie’s Patriot among the heavy weights had a host of admirers ; Messrs Beetham Bros Jacques coming next. Mr W H Levin’s pair buggy horses which took first prize in their class were a well matched and fine pair. In single buggy horses there was good competition, Messrs Beetham’s Darkey taking first honors ; Mr A McKenzie’s Fakeha was considered a splendid animal. In brood hack mares (dry) Mr J McLeod’s Maggie-took first prize, aud in hack mares in foal or with foal at foot, Mr Buchanan secuied first, with an old prize taker, Flora, formerly shown as a light weight hack, Mr Gayfer’s Silver Queen who took honors last year, took second. Mr Buchanan took first prize for plough horses with a pair of sturdy-looking chestnut mares. In draughts, Mr J Harding’s Gladstone was awarded first, and was the pink of perfection ; Laird O’ Largo who took second prize was only a shade behind. Cashier, Lord Nelson, Avon and Punch had many admirers. Taken altogether, the exhibits of horse flesh was one of the best yet seen upon these grounds, and high enooniums were passed upon the fine specimens. Notwithstanding the opinions of some that the show of cattle would be inferior this year owing to the severe winter through which they had passed, it must be conceded that the exhibits taken as a whole were first class. The judges in their remarks paid high cornpliments to the breeders, and it is pleasing to see a continued advance in this class of stock. In purebred shorthorns Mr Buchanan’s 3 year old bulls took first and second prizes ; Messrs Bidwill Bros’ exhibit being very little in the rear. Mr A McMaster’s two year old bull lay Minstrel Duke 11. won first prize. Mr D McMaster’s red and white cow Fiako took champion prize, while he also secured high commendation and commendation for other exhibits. Mr P Hume took second prize in this class. In dry cows Mr D McMaster took all the honors and took first for three year old heifer. Mr A. McMaster’s Norah took first in two year old heifers, the others being taken by Messrs Beetham Bros. Mr P. Hume secured first honors for yearling' heifers; Mr D. McMaster taking the next two honors. In grade shorthorns Messrs Beetham were to the front with their cow Snowdrop, taking silver medal ; Messrs Bidwill Bros and J. P. Russell divided the remaining honors. For dry cows Messrs Beetham Bros came first, Mr Russell second. In heifers the prizes fell among Messrs W. and H. Beetham, V. and A. McMaster, J P Russell, and Bidwill Bros. Purebred Merefords—Mr Stuckey with his bull Chippendale stood first. The other exhibitor of Hereford* who took honors was Mr J. Rayner. In Ayrshires Mr H. D. Crawford took first prize for three year old bull, the only entry. In Foiled Angus, Handyside and Roberts took both honors ; they were the only exhibitors. There was not much competition in dairy cows. There were some splendid exhibits in fat cattle, and Messrs Bidwill Bros took most of the honors. Messrs Russell and Buchanan were also prize takers, Nothing could have been more satisfactory to a competent judge than the splendid exhibits in most of the classes. The Wairarapa is eminently fitted for producing this animal in its best features, and all who inspected the pens on Show day were struck with (he high quality of the exhibits. In merinos there was not much competition, Mr Pharazyn taking nearly all the prizes. Mr Reynolds was the only prizetaker in the Cotswold class. There was good competition for Lincolns in the wool, Mr Buchanan taking Ist and 2nd, in twos and singles. There were some fine rams shown in this class. In Keicesters in the wool there were few exhibits; Mr Buchanan aud Messrs Beetham Bros diyided all the honors between them. The Romney Marsh entries could not be beaten, and in these Mr Matthews shone, taking first and second for 2-tooth ; Mr Allen’s rams were much admired. Mr Dorset took first for a ram of the old style. Mr Matthews was the chief prize taker in other sections. lu Shropshire Downs Mr Tancred was very successful ia prize taking ; he had very liltle opposition. In Southdowns Mr Buchanan aud Messrs Beetham were ths only exhibi-f-ors. the distribution of prizes being pretty evenly divided. Iff *at sheep Mr Matthews and Mr Buchanan took all the prizes, aud their sheep were really fine specimens. There was no great competition for pigs, although there were a number of special prizes offered. The show of agricultural implements was poor. In local industry out prize list.will show.the successful competitors. It is to be regretted that there was so little interest taken in this department of the show. There was good competition in butter both fresh and salt and opinions seemed to be very much divided as to the difference of quality. We cannot refrain from calling attention to the hams and bacons shown by Mr S. Haigh. It is a pity that the cheese factories did not compete in the matter of cheese, and we should have liked to have seen our woollen faotories represented by exhibits of material. There were eleven entries for the leaping match, aud the eontest created quite a diversion among the spectators. The three horses named in the prize list were the only ones that showed good form at the jumping. Spartan got nine points ; Tawera eight. Many thought that the latter took the water jump cleaner than ‘he former-
