The Sculling Championship.
London, September 20. The weather was fine for the race between Wallace Rosa and Beach, but the tide was poor. At the start sto 2 was laid on Beach, who choose the Surrey side. Rosa had slightly the beat of the start, pulling at the rate of 33, Beach H5. At the Star and Gaiter Beach had gained a length, and at Rosebanks was four lengths ahead, rowing easily. When passing the Soap Works Ross made a fruitless spurt. In order to avoid the barges at Hammersmith Bridge, Beach steered for the centre of the River, but suddenly returned to the Surrey arch, passing the bridge half a length ahead of Ross. The former rapidly resumed hj“ previous advantage, and when passing Barnes was leading by ten lengths. Time, 23miu sseo ; Ross, 12seo later. September 27.
