(FROM OCR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) the case of m'raf and others. In the House of Representatives on Thursday, the Public Fetitious Committee reported on the petitions of O. H. Humphreys, J. Bird and J. Mcßae, sufferers by the volcanic eruptions, to the effect that while they considered the petitioners had no claim on the colouy, yet, seeing that the petitioners would have been able to save a good deal of property iu a few days succeeding the eruption had they uot devoted their energies to saving life, the Government should take this into consideration in putting a sum on the Esti> mates fur them. The Piemier said that the Government intended to put a small sum on the Si p demeutary tstimates for the aid of these persona. EleiHT HOURS BILL. Mr Bradshaw moved the second reading of this Bill, which, he said, provided (that eight hours should be a day's work, and that, he submitted, was quite enough. After a stiff debate the motion for the second reading was lost by a majority of one vote. The House rose at 12.50. THE DISTRICT RAILWAY In the House of Representatives on Friday Sir George Grey asked a question as to iiow Mr F. Slee, the Secretary of the Waimate Railway Company, came to be appointed a J.P.; and not getting a satisfactory answer, the adjournment of the House was moved, and Sir George Grey went into the whole question of The District Railway Scandal, and nude a hashing attack upon Vogel and Major Steward, strongly condemnatory of their conduct. Vogel made a wretchedly weak reply and declared ha was going to raise actions for Libel against the Times and Evening Press. An exciting debate ensued during which Major Atkinson and Mr Garrick made most powerful speeches, and assailed Steward and Vogel in the most effective and damaging way. Other speakers followed and Vogel and Steward got pelted all round. UUkmtsly the subject was allowed to drop. REPRESENTATION ACT, 1886. The Premier moved the first of this Bill, which motion was canM- Tha second reading was set down for Monday night, Jte Boon tow at 14Q.
