Waiohine River Board.

The Waiohine Fiver Board, so far as Qreytown is concerned, is without question tha most valuable and useful body yet incorporated in the district. It has been one of tbe principal means of making Oreytown what it is at present, one of the prettiest and moat attractive towns in the Wairarapa. Had this Board been in existence years before it realty was, Greytown without a doubt, independent of being tbe oldest town, would have been considerably in advance of its present condition, notwithstanding one minor drawback—soon to be remedied—namely, the tell between Carterton and Greytown. At a recent meeting of the Board Mr Wyatt, the Chairman, rather surprised tbe member* when be stated that they possessed a valuable reserve in close proximity to tbe northern part of tbe town, which was known as the Channel Reserve. It had been naed, perhaps inadvertently by some of the resi dents of the Borough, and although for some years it had been practically useless, it was now of some value. The members opened their eyes at the intelligence, for the knowledge that this was a reserve granted to tbe Biver Conservators appears to have dropped oat of memory. They at once decided to taka stapa to make tbe reserve remun Ittive to the district, and tenders, to close on stb April, are invited for tbe purchase or lease for a term of 14 years of the ( hannel Reserve, situated on the Hupenui Block. It appears that some year* ago this reserve, which is now excellent grazing ground, was set apart for a channel or new course, which the river was expected to take in the immediate vicinity of the Borough ; but thanks to the energy and perseverance of the Board and their officials, the river has been confined to its present coarse, snd there is no probability of a channel being ever required iu the direction of the reserve. The reserve is abont one mile and a quarter in length and about six chains wide, and is expected to return, when leased, fully £6O per annum rental. The River Board have been compelled to borrow £SOO at 8 prr cent., wni.h of course necessitates a disbursement lot interest to the amount of £4O, const quently this newlydiscovered revenue will place the Board in an improved position, and give much farther ■cope for an extension of us protective tutfnloess. To Mr Wyett, the thanks of both tbe Borough of Greytown and the entire district ate most decidedly due for his trouble in looking np tha matter.
