Wool and Wheat.
Decent cable messages are to the effect that the wool market is weaker and especially low in greasy sorts. Since the commencement of the sales in London 178,000 bales have been catalogued, of which number 25,000 were withdrawn. This indicates that wool is likely to be still lower in price than it has hitherto been, and consequently the news is depressing to wool producers in this colony. On the other hand, the wheat market in London shows an upward tendency. April and May cargoes have been sold at 36s 6d, and February shipments at 87s 3d. Holders, however, demand a higher price. The views about the wool market will appear gloomy to sheepowners in the Wairarapa, but Canterbury grain growers will rejoice at the prospect of better prices being maintained for wheat.
