Prohibition in Native Districts.

A large area of native territory in the provincial districts of Auckland, Taranaki and Wellington has been proclaimed in the Gazette as a series of districts in which no licenses for the sale of intoxicating liquors will be issued. The proclamation has been issued at the instance of the natives themselves. a majority of whom desire to be free from the curse of drink. The sale of liquor iu those districts can only be prevented if the general feeling of the natives continues dead against it. But should there arise much division of opinion on the subject, then “ sly grog shanties ” will be established by unprincipled white men, and those natives who want to buy drink will get as much as they please. The prevention of any drink traffic will depend on the natives themselves being unanimous and determined against its existence.
