THE ENGLISH NEWS.
The English mail, via Suez, arrived at the Bluff on the 17th inst. The are few items of news of any absorbing interest. The Queen is in good health and has received private visits from the Queen of Prussia and the Empress Eugenie. The Princess of Wales has all but recovered. Three thousand Belgian Volunteers have visited England to whom Miss Burdell Coutts gave a splendid fete which was attended by 12,000 persons. Tire report of the wool market is unfavourable. The Privy Council has delivered judgment in Bertrand’s case. They find that no miscarriage of justice had taken place, aud judgment of the Chief Justice of New South Wales must be affirmed Appeal is sustained with costs, and an order for new trial reversed.
The house of Lords has passed the Reform Bill with amendments introducing the principle of the representatives of minorities, and the use of voting papers. The House of Commons has accepted the first, but rejected the last. It has also passed a Bill abolishing Church rates. There does not appear to be any knowledge at home either of Sir George Grey’s recall or of the appointment of his successor.
