TOPICS OF THE HOUR. ITEMS OF INTEREST. (Our Resident Representative.) During the past three days heavy and almost continuous rains have fallen in this territory, causing rivers and streams to run bank high. Numerous slips are reported along the roadways of the hinterland, but none, so far, of large dimensions. Despite the winter conditions, many distinguished overseas visitors continue to arrive at the Waitcmo Caves Hostel, and express their delight on viewing the various sights of Waitomc's wonderland.

The Hangatiki branch of the Women's Institute held a well-attended .Tune meeting, when Mil's Scholes gave an interesting demonstration on fancy knitting. The "musical parcel" competition was won by Mrs Stilwell. The president congratulated members on the Institute's success at the recent Te Kuiti Winter Show, where their exhibits gained first prize. Mavis Mary Hirst, of Otorohanga, successfully petitioned for a divorce from her husband, Sydney Noel Hirst, before Mr Justice Fair, at the Hamilton Supreme Court, en Thursday Last. The decree nisi will be moved absolute at the expiration of three months, and interim custody of the only child was granted to the petitioner. The respondent admitted the allegations in the petition. Many Otorohanga enthusiasts attended the Ladies' Hockey Club dance in the Kio Kio Hall on Tuesday evening, despite unfavourable weather conditions. Hemera's Orchestra provided the dance music, whilst Mr Donnison functioned as the principal M.C. A splendid supper was a feature of a pleasing evening's entertainment. Novelty dances were featured, the winner-, being Miss McKerras and Mv Jrckson, Miss Gwen Morley and Mr M. Frew, and Miss A. Hall and Mr L. Cameron.

The Otorohanga girls will field a hockey team against Hah'ini, at Te Awamutu, on Saturday afternoon next.

The Waipa River ijj in high flood and many low-lying areas between Otorohanga and Hangatiki have been converted into lakes of muddy water. Flood waters from the same source have crossed the Otewa and also the Honikiwi and Mangacrongo (Rive: 1 Road) main highways, making them, unsafe for motor traffic. Up to 9 o'clock this morning, Wednesday, a total of 3.91 in has fallen in the previous 48 hours. On Tuesday the rainfr.ll a. : : Otorohanga was 3.21 in, which caused a rise of 15ft in the Waipa River, !n a few hours.
