PEDIGREE SALES
BUY IN YOUR OWN -DISTRICT. When it was decided at this week’s meeting of the Matamata Jersey Club to hold a sale of pedigree cows and heifers, one of the members, Mr Garland, advocated that one of the first pages in the catalogue of the sale should be devoted to a written guarantee by all members subscribing to the effect that their cows were sound and in calf. The president, Mr H. Lewis, said they had to be careful, as even the best cow might come in unsound.; Mr Peffers asked what the guarantee would be—so much off the price, or what? Mr Garland said the main guarantee should be that the animal was in calf. No one could guarantee a ca-f to be sound. A cow which calved and was left without shelter would probably be unsound. Mr Peffers said he knew of a case where a man bought an animal and it was knocked on the udder and became unsound. The seller had to take it back. Mr Lewis thought a guarantee could only be given that an animal was sound when turned out and that it was in calf. On the motion of Messrs Barker and Field it was decided to have a vendor’s guarantee printed.
