TRIBUTES OF ESTEEM
TO MR AND MRS BUTTERWORTH,
A farewell social was tendered by the congregation to the Rev. W. and Mrs Butterworth at Whakatane last Friday night. There was a large attendance, including representatives from every part of the county. The Rev. E. Bandy, Presbyterian minister of Taneatua, presided. Mr Bandy paid a glowing tribute to the work of Mr Butterworth since the latter took over the charge of Knox Church a little over three years ago. work had been characterised by zeal .and thoroughness and would be of a lasting character. The speaker felt that, he was voicing the feeling of the congregation when he said that they were losing a diligent and faithful pastor, and a pastor- who was well beloved. Mr Bandy also paid a tribute to Mrs Butterworth, who had always proved a source of strength and inspiration to her husband. He, wished them both God’s greatest blessing in their new sphere of labour at Te Awamutu.
The Rev. E. M. Eruini, representing the Anglican Church, said he was pleased to be present so that a united farewell could be given to Mr and Mrs Butterworth and family. He expressed a feeling of affection toward the guests and regret at their aproaching departure from Whakatane. Oh behalf of the (Anglican Church he thanked Mr and Mrs Butterworth for the many good offices done by them. Their work would long be remembered in Whakatane and he expressed the hope that health, happiness and success would attend 'them wherever they went. Rev. J. T. Tulloch, Methodist minister, joined in the good wishes to Mr and Mrs Butterworth and family, and hope that their best work was still before them.
Mr A. McGougan, on behalf of the Taneatua congregation, agreed with all that had been said about Mr and Mrs Butterworth. It had been a good thing to divide the district up into separate charges, and Mr Butterworth had been the right man in the right place. He wished the departing guests God speed. Mr H. R. Robinson, elder of Knox Church, paid a great tribute to the organising ability which had characthe work of Mr Butterworth in IWhakatane. They were all grateful to Mr and Mrs Butterworth for their splendid work in the parish. Mr W. McFarland, session clerk, said that the Church had been built up wonderfully under the leadership of Mr and Mrs Butterworth. On behalf of the congregation, Bible Class and the Sunday school he presented a wallet of notes to Mr Butterworth as a token of esteem and love. Mr Butterworth, in reply, returned his sincere 'thanks for the present and the kind words that had been uttered. Any success he had achieved in his work had been largely due to Mrs Butterworth. They both had enjoyed immensely the life in Whakatane. All had been very kind and considerate to them. They had the joy of knowing that they would be going away with the very good wishes of the congregation. Whakatane would always hold a sincere place in the hearth of both Mrs Butterworth and himself.
