WAIKATO ELECTORATE
PROBARLY STRAIGHT-OUT
CONTEST.
MAJOR SAMUEL WITHDRAWS.
Developments in connection with the contest for the Waikato seat at the forthcoming general elections have occurred this week, the outcome of which is that following in Auckland Major A. 3.£*%amuel, the unofficial Reform candidate, has undertaken to withdraw from the contest in favour oL the official Reform candidate, Mr D. Stewart Reid. It appears that the Reform League executive induced both gentlemen to attend a round-table conference with representatives of the League in Auckland, to discuss the claims of each to priority: As a result of the conference and hearing the bqth sides the meeting decided in favour o.f Mr Reid, and thereupon Major Samuel intimated that he would withdraw from the campaign in favour of Mr Reid. It is stated that after iMr Reid was chosen Major Sam pel himself congratulated the successful gentleman and promised him every support at the forthcoming elections. The League pointed out that there were special circumstances which contributed to the decision going in favour of Mr Reid. • At the same time, the League was so impressed with Major Samuel’s claims, that it discussed with him the representation of another electorate. Major Samuel deferred his decision.
..This now leaves.a good there being a straight-out contest' between the National candidate, Mr F. Lye, M.P., and the Reform candidate, Mr Reid, for there has been no pronouncement—or so far as we can learn—no indication of a likelihood that official Labour will be represented in the contest. Of course, there is yet time for a move from that direction, but the indications are that there will be only two candidates.
