DANNEVIRKE, Friday. , In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Charles Williams, of Napier, pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence on a charge of obtaining £2O from Emily Butler, licensee of Mangatera Hotel, by means ,of a valueless: cheque. Acc.used, who is eighty years of age, drovfe up in a taxi, borrowed a pound from the licensee to pay the driver, and subsequently, represented himself as. an Australian cattle buyer in New Zealand looking for a farm for bis'son. Later he exhibited a bogus cheque ' for ‘five <■ thousand pounds drawn on an Australian bank, and on the strength of this obtained an advance of twenty pounds. He disappeared the following day and was eventually arrested at New Plymouth. He attributed his trouble to drink.
