POSTAL FINANCE.
MINISTER DEFENDS TELEPHONE CHARGES. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Postmaster General, estimates that the Post and Telegraph Department will show a profit of about £450,000 by March 31, although three years ago there was a deficit of £I3OO. He defended the alteration in the telephone rates on the ground that people who used it most should pay most, and that the business rates were too low in comparison with private rates. The object was to give the country people a reasonable rate. He believed that telephones should come before roads. They were a great comfort to the backblocks settlers, especially to the women. The same thing applied to the rural mail service. Postal finance was buoyant, said the Minister, and he only wished the railway finance was as good. i
