TE RAU-A-MOA
(Own Correspondent.)
The secretary of a ratepayers' meeting held at Te Rau-anMoa early in the new year received the following: "Your letter of 4th ultimo asking if the Waitomo County Council would give employment to the ratepayers in Te riding to enafole them to pay their rates was duly considered by the Council at its last meeting. I regret to have to advise you that owing to the present financial position of the county it is impossible to comply with your request. One reason of the financial stringency is the large debit 'balances in the riding accounts. At the present time your riding is overdrawn to the extent of afoout £I2OO, s»o you can see that although the Council would like to foe in a position to help the ratepayers foy giving them work, to do so at the present time would not in any. way reduce the Council's liafoilities.'
Good progress is being made with work on the farms, font returns are very small. The local dairy company, which collects cream gratis, is paying out 6d only for butter-fat, from which |d per lb is deducted for share capital. With increased taxes to meet and smaller returns from the land the settlers deserve credit for improving their farms the way they are doing. Owing to the very favourable season hay and crops are the best known, while mangold and turnip crops give promise of record weight of foulfo.
