SPORTS AT EASTER.
TOWN BAND AND FIRE BRIGADE
Interest in a proposal to hold a sports meeting in Te Awamutu at Easter was evidenced last night in the large attendance at the meeting to consider prelminaries. Though called at short notice, the meeting was attended by forty enthusiasts, the band room being well filled. Mr W. Mensforth was elected chairman.
Mr J. Crotty said the idea was for a sports meeting on Easter Monday, and he thought that there was an ample number of good sportsmen who would work for the success of such a fixture. He had in mind a picnic meeting with a programme so arranged as to provide entertainment and recreation for the children and all who attended. Mr A. G. Warburton pointed out that sports were already planned to take place at Otorohanga on that day, and they should try to avoid any clashing of interests.
Mr H. T. Haselden suggested Easter Saturday as a good day for the Te Awamutu fixture. Outside competitors would come here on Saturday and go on to Otorohanga on Monday, and in this way both meetings would help each other. Some discussion ensued as to whether Saturday would be observed as a holiday this year, and on a vote being taken between the rival days it was decided in favour of Easter Monday. The meeting unanimously decided that any surplus of funds should (be equally divided between the Municipal Band and the Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Officials elected were : Secretary, Mr A. Fricker; programme committee, Messrs J. 'Crotty, J. Bridge, H. T. Haselden, I. F. McDonald, W. Potter, A. Newsome, and M. Deed, and SergeantMajor F. J. Petchell.
The committee will meet on Wednesday and report its proposals to a public meeting next Friday.
A resident of Te Rau-a-'Moa writes: The main each road is in a shocking and dangerous state, and unless the ratepayers bestir themselves and get water tables, 'etc., attended to communication with the railway will he cut off during the coming winter. Last year the numiber of broken vehicles resulting from the neglected state of the coach road was appalling.
The assistance given the poilce on show day by Messrs 1 Fricker and Bell in capturing Taylor, the showman who absconded after allegedly ringing the changes on a young man. was appreciatively commented upon by the magistrate, Mr H. A. Young, in the court on Thursday. The character of Taylor was unknown to them, he said. He might have been a dangerous criminal, and he did indeed throw a brick at one of them, which, had it struck him, would have inflicted Serious injury. Their action in continuing the pursuit he warmly commended.
The Te Awamutu Municipal Band played a select programme of music in Alexandra Street last night, which was enjoyed (by a considerable number of people. The collection totalled £3 15s 3d. The Band will give a recital in Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon. The efforts of the Dairy Farmers' Union to bring mortgagors and mortgagees together in order to effect a reduction in cases where payment in full is impossible have already met with a fair measure of success. We are advised that to date a voluntary reduction of mortgages aggregating £32,000 has been made, and unpaid back interest to the extent of £IOOO, in sums of £SO, £9O, £IOO, and £2OO, has been voluntarily remitted. Those mortgagees are showing a fine spirit and their action has so stabilised the affairs of those farmers concerned that they will now be able to carry on. A few years ago it was customary for those seeking information regarding hydro-electric reticulation systems to turn to Canterbury for practical demonstration, but nowadays the tendency is for inquiry to be made in Waikato. Yesterday Messrs Lethbridge and Dalrymple (chairman) and one of the members of the WanganuiRangitikei Power Board were in Te Awamutu surveying the works so far carried out in this district. 'They spent the earlier part of the day inspecting the works within the borough, and later in the day made a tour of the district. They informed our representative that in the southern districts Te Awamutu is regarded as one of the practical and successful country reticulation systems in New Zealand. The work in the Rangitikei district, it is hoped, will be started before very long. The visitors were shown over the works here by Mr J. T. Johnson (chairman of the Te Awamutu Electric Power Board), Mr L. G. Armstrong (Mayor of Te Awamutu), Mr H. F. Toogood (engineer to the local Power Board,), and Mr E. Bickerstaff (resident engineer).
