MR. SCHOLES AT KAIPAKI.

(Special Correspondent.) Mr Scholes addressed a good audience at Kaipaki on Friday evening when he received a splendid hearing. Mr Smith presided. Mr Scholes being a farmer evidently appealed to the audience. On the land question he advocated development rather than settlement getting ahead of development. He condemned the Local Bodies Bill, which had been brought down by the present Government, In regard to the Native land problem he said that the solution was to treat Natives as equals and not as children. As showing the unfairness of the present system he stated that several well-educated natives had been refused the right to deal with their own land.

The idea being to protect their own interests where they were unable to look after it. In answer to the question as to how he would carry on development during the present crisis, he said the Farmers’ Union had suggested establishing a State Bank. He thought it a would be good business for the state to issue state notes for any development work. This means had seen other countries through other difficult times. Several other questions were answered satisfactorily and the meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to s the speaker.
