COUNTY BOUNDARIES.

SUGGESTED EXTENSION OF WAIPA COUNTY.

(From a Correspondent.)

As the result of the anxiety of settlers in various King Country districts to adjusttheircommunity of interest under County Council control, the newly-operative Awakino County has asked tire Waitomo and Kawhia Counties to cooperate in going into the matter of county boundaries, and to have a commission set up. King Coun-' try counties have been defined and established according to the requirements of settlement, with the result that community of interests is totally disregarded. So far as the northern part of the King Country is concerned it is held that, as the railway is the central means of transport, the eastern and western interests should be divided. Arrangements are being made to urge the advis, ability of a county including all that portion of Waitomo County west of ,the railway ; the county of Awakino and South Kawhia to be controlled from the railway, for the reason that all the main roads run from the coast to the railway. It is further suggested that the Waipa county boundaries should be extended to Kawhia harbour, and that, in view of the projected Frankton- Raglan -Kawhia railway, the northern part should be absorbed by Raglan, thus bringing under control from points on the railway all main roads connecting with the coast from Mokau to Raglan.

There is no dpubt that existing conditions require revision, and the control of roads as indicated would go a long way towards arriving at a solution of the common interests of settlers between the railway and the sea-.; board. It is held by settlers who are advocating this scheme that it is the most satisfactory yet profounded for the distinct advantageof Kawhia harbour and its component parts. The steps being taken towards putting before the proposed commission the advantages of coast - to - railway roads are sure to involve the counties of Waipa and Raglan, so that in, the near future it is possible that community of interests will be settled for many years to come.
