Correspondence
A letter was read from the Hon. VV. H. Herries, Minister Railways, informing the Board that owing to the nature of the locality at Lake Road crossing, it is impossible to provide satisfactory level crossings with a good view of the line, and the on'v suitable crossing that could be provided would be by means of an overhead bridge. The grades in the locality will shortly require to be improved, and plans are at present under preparation with that end in view. Under the circumstances the Minister could not see his way to authorise any expenditure in the direction desire'd at' the present time, but the matter would be further considered before the grade alterations are undertaken. A further communication was | read from the Minister of Rail- | ways in reply to the representation of the Board that an alteration should be made in the approach to the cattle yards at Ngaroto. The Minister stated that the alteration would amount to about £SO and as the grades at that station will shortly have to be altered, which will involve a considerable re-arrangement of the station yard, he was of opinion that no expenditure should be made at the station at present. The matter, however, would be attended to when the alteration in the grades is put in hand. The president of the le Awamutu Chamber of Commerce wrote referring to the frequent narrow escapes from fatal accidents at level crossings in and about Te Awamutu, and everrecurring fatalities at railway crossings in other parts of the Dominion.and craving the Board's support of an attached resolution passed by the Chamber, calling the Government's attention to the shocking waste of human life caused through accidents at level crossings, and to respectfully pray that immediate action be taken to reduce these casuailties.
