THE LIGHTING QUESTION.
POLL OF RATEPAYERS
MAJORITY FAVOURS ELECTRICITY.
Last year a loan proposal authorising the Town Board to borrow £B,OOO for coal gas works, was carried by the ratepayers. Subsequently a petition was presented to the Board from a large number of ratepayers asking that the Board re-consider the matter. As a result of this petition a poll of ratepayers took place on Friday last at the Board's office, to determine which system of lighting—electricity, coal gas, or acetylene—was to be adopted for lighting Te Awamutu. There were 161 ratepayers who voted, 91 being in favour of electricity, 53 for coal gas, and 17 for acetylene. It will now be necessary to take a fresh poll for authority to raise the necessary loan for electricity.
