The report of the Finance Committee showed total receipts at £6044, and exoenditure at- £2586, with a debit balance of £B9l, leaving a balance of £2567 available for allocation, equivalent to about I2s 6d in the £ on the rates collected. The following schedule shows the amount available in each riding :• —Rangiaohia, £579; Pukekura, £744; Mangapiko, £310; Hamilton, £384; Tuhikaramea, £245; Newcastle, £228. Supervisor's Report. The supervisor's report was read as follows : The very wet month just past has tried the roads severely, and in many places clay roads have broken up badly. Even where they are sanded or gravelled, the traffic in many parts, is now so heavy, that the roads have gone into holes. It is becoming increasingly evident, especially in the Rangiaohia and Mangapiko Ridings, that, under present conditions, metalling is the only and economical plan of dealing with our principal roads. Of course, this would mean borrowing money, as metalling in this country is too expensive to be done solely out of revenue. There is little to report in the way of work clone. No new work, beyond necessary repairs, has been undertaken. As far as possible I have endeavoured to get anything specially bad attended to, but as we are working at present sometimes I am not aware of bad places until they become very bad, and timely attention might have prevented it. Then again, it is not always easy to get a man at a moment's notice to attend to what is wanted. It appears to me that if a suitable man could be secured in each riding, it would be a good plan to guarantee him, say, three days' work every week during four winter months. His duties would be to go round all the county roads in his riding, sec that drains were in an efficient condition, holes filled up as they ap-
pear, and in any special case report to me. Conference re metal : On the 29th ult. 1 attended the conference at liuntly re the above. There was a good attendance ot delegates. On inspecting the quarry most of those present were very favourably impiessed both as to the quantity and quality of the metal. Subsequently Mr Bailey, upon whose property the quarry is situated, stated that provided a railway siding could be obtained, he was prepared to put the metal on the trucks it 5s per cubic yard, and also to pay the annual charge of £SO for maintenance of siding. What the local bodies arc asked to do is to use their united influence to obtain the siding, and to divide the cost of its construction amongst them. No definite action was taken, but the meeting was adjourned to Hamilton on the first Wednesday in August, at 10 o'clock.—The report was adopted.
