RANGIAOHIA.
[Own Correspondent.]
The annual school picnic was held in Mr Thos. Weal’s paddock on Friday last, and although the attendance during the early.part of the day was "thin” yet as the day advanced a very much larger number rolled up and helped to make the annual gathering one of the most successful that has yet been held. Most of the youngsters were, of course, early on the spot and were enjoying themselves with various games. At noon a substantial lunch was partaken of and real fun began. Races were the first order for the afternoon, and by the time the prize money was exhausted most of the young folk present had won something (either a first or second prize) and consequently were satisfied with that part of the programme. Messrs Weal and Collinson as managers of the racing, programme proved most indefatigable, and the right [men in the right places. The races over, the children then assembled to receive their usual prize (a book), Mr J. H. Mandeno, chairman of the local school committee, in a brief speech gave the children some sound advice, and then proceeded to hand over the books. Each child having received his book, three hearty cheers were then given for Mr j. H. Mandeno and the Rangiaohai school committee. Tea was then provided for all and, needless to say, was done full* justice to.
Before the final departure Mr Weal scattered broadcast an ample supply of lollies and thus ended yet one more Rangiaohia school picnic. The usual dance took place in the evening and this too proved, as-had the picnic, a huge success. Mr I eddy kindly acted as M.C. and to his genial attention much of the success of the evening was due. Yet another of our settlers has sold his farm. Mr Lacey Peak, though not long resident in the district, has sold at a highly satisfactory figure and will in the course of a few months be moving to pastures new. Mr Peake’s removal from the district will cause genuine regret as he has proved himself a good neighbour and friend to all. Still these are the days of acute land dealing so one can only grin and bear it and wonder who will be the next to become affected. 1 here are others already showing most alarming symptoms.
