WITH THE DIGGERS

ON THE BOWLING GREEN INAUGURATION OF ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. Yesterday saw the successful inauguration of v an annual bowling tournament for returned soldiers of Hawke’s Bay. It was the outcome of meetings of delegates from the various branches of the Returned Soldiers’ Association throughout the province, in connection with the monster picnic which is to be held shortly. A considerably gTeater measure of success was experienced in the matter of the weather for bowls than for the picnic, the only complaint yesterday being that it was too hot. Originally it was thought that there would be fourteen rinks in the competition, but owing to various causes this number was reduced to ten. AA’hen the teams lined up yesterday, however, it was found that there were two rinks absent without leave, Dannevirke and AVaipukurau, and these last-minute defections were the subject of some very adverse comment, and an explanation is called for. The competing rinks comprised representatives from Napier, Bluff Hill, Havelock North, Omarunui, AVoodville and AA r aipawa (two), and there could he no mistaking the fact that the players spent a most enjoyable day. Five games of 11 heads were played and all were keenly contested. The final issue rested between Havelock North and Omarunui, who met in the last round. The former had four wins to their credit, and Omarnnui had one loss, so that a win for the latter would make a tie on points. The game was fought every inch of the way, point for point. On the last head Omarunui wanted two to tie and three to win. AA’hen the skips went down they were lying two. Anderson tried to remove the shot bowls by driving but missed and Oliver drew another, registering a meritorious win. The tourney, which was organised and run by the local executive, went through without a hitch, and many were the favorable comments passed by the visitors. It was decided that the two rinks which tied should play a full-rink game of 21 heads on a green to he selected, and Omarunui generously agreed to play at Havelock. In handing to Mr Anderson, skip of the Havelock team, the beautiful silver cup presented by Mr N. Solomon, Mr H. T. Limbrick, president of the Waipawa branch of the R.5.A.., heartily thanked the players for their assistance in making the first tournament such a success. He also announced that at a meeting of skips held in the morning it had been decided to make the gathering an annual one, to be played at AVaipawa and organised by the local branch. Responding on behalf of the visitors Mr Anderson paid tribute to the wonderful spirit of camaraderie which had been evident throughout the day’s play. He congratulated the local executive on the excellence of: the arrangements, and expressed the hope, that their efforts would be rewarded with a full entry next year. Hearty cheers were given for the winning rinks and also for the donor of the cup. . At the meeting of the skips a resolution was adopted thanking the AA aipawa Bowling Club and the Sports Club for their kindly co-operation in placing the green at the disposal of the diggers.
