ENEMY ATTACKS.

ON THE WESTERN FRONT. ALL FAIL. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) LONDON, August 6. Marshal Haig reports:— The enemy attacked in the neighborhood of Hollebeke but was driven off before reaching our lines. An attack under cover of a heavy barrage against Westiioek was equally unsuccessful. We repulsed a raid east. THE TANKS. CONSTANTLY IN ACTION. Australian and N.Z. Ca’iL Association. LONDON, August 5. Mr Phillip Gibbs states that two tanks were constantly in action for seventeen and twenty-four hours respectively. The crews were cramped between the engines and guns and had no head space and the engines were going at full blast.

The heat within was terrific, and the occupants were flung about in traversing the rough ground like fishermen in a wild gale. They stared through the periscope till their eyes ached watching our own infantry signals and the enemy barrage. For seventeen hours this work was done with the chance of death all the time. It was a severe test for even the strongest. Tile rain turned the ground into a quagmire. The tanks frequently got hogged near St. Julien. The crews emerged and worked for a couple of hours under shell and machine gun fire to extricate them.
