HERRERTVILLE NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.) Since my last jottings were sent in things have been going on much the same as usual. On Saturday afternoon last, a resident in the township received a telegram from Wellington, stating that the “ Kiwi ” might be looked for some time on the Tuesday following. Great excitement of course prevailed, for in very truth we seemed more like a beleagured fortress anxiously awaiting the arrival of a convoy, than anything else I know of. Sunday’s very fine weather raised considerably, not only the hopes and expectations of everyone interested, but also tended to greatly improve their tempers ; but when on Monday a slight breeze sprung up from the south-west, all seemed to lose heart, and for the time disappointment took its place. Tuesday, however, broke upon us most beautifully calm and fine; scarcely a zephyr stirred until about 4 o’clock, when the trim little craft dropped anchor at the Cape and commenced discharging ; our troubles for a time therefore are over. The Educational Reserve at the back of the settlement is being surveyed by Mr McNichol, assisted by an efficient staff. We trust that good results, not only to the Provincial district, but also to its immediate neighbourhood, will accrue from the fact that it is to be thrown open in “ small ” blocks, and so induce capitalists to settle there.

The Babbit line of fencing, separating this district from the Wairarapa, is still going on, but we are afraid very slowly, owing, no doubt, to the difficulties that must necessarily be encountered by the working parties in the shape of rough country and heavy bush. As nothing more has since been seen or heard of “ bunny ” in this district, I am inclined to think the late report which occasioned so much excitement some time back was but a hoax, but I must say it was a most miserably poor one, in fact we fail to see the joke at all.
