ORMONDVILLE NOTES.

{From our own Correspondent.')

Tite Hoad Board held an adjourned meeting on Thursday evening last, when Mr F. C. Shugar was appointed Clerk, Collector, and Returning Officer to the Board.

The trustees of the Cemetery held a meeting on the same evening, when tenders were opened and one accepted for felling the remainder of the busli left standing on the reserve. There is k likelihood of a good many candidates being brought forward to represent this district at the approaching County Council election. The majority of the ratepayers are in favour of a local candidate, and have no wish to be represented from either Waipukuraii or Waipawa. The Bev. Mr Webb, lately from England, has come to reside amongst us with his family. A cottage, with some few acres of laud attached has been purchased by him, which is being enlarged.

A few months ago there were a good many empty houses in Ormondville, but they are now all occupied, which is a good sign that the place is looking up.

Mr Webber, late station master at the Makatoku, has purchased Mr Brower’s store at that place, and has 'ommenced busines as storekeeper. All the small sections belonging to Mrs Friberg’s estate facing the main road are now sold, and cottages are being put up on some of them. There is some talk of making an effort to start a Cheese Factory in this district, but I am afraid it is too soon to think of any thing of the kind. There are certainly enough of cows in the district, but owing to the bad

roads ar.d the settlers being scattered over a number of small holdings, it would militate against such a scheme, and it would never pay to take the milk of a few cows only to the factory. “ Your own ” from Makatoku has been misinformed on Hoad Board business, when he states that the total amount of rates for Hoad Board purposes is about £3O; if he will take the trouble to look at the rate-book, he will find that the amount is nearer £100; and as to the appointment of Clerk,Collector, and Beturning-Offlcer at the salary of £ls per annum, if “ your own ” had been at the last few meetings of the Board, he would have known the reason that the appointment was made , and as to the mode of selection, one of the lowest tenders was appointed. If the Makatoku people, in place of taking steps to form themselves into a Hoad District, were to try and have the Ormondville and Norsewood Hoad Districts merged into one, it would be much better for the whole district.
