A cable has been received from London announcing the placing on the London market of £50,000 worth of debentures of the Kaihu Valley Bail-' way Company. They have already spent £IO,OOO in building a large wharf at Dargaville, completing the first section of the line, buildings, &c. The Waihora and her passengers are released from quarantine. A native boy, Taurouti of Waohu, shot himself, being crossed in love. The man who cut his throat at Monganui Bluff hotel, proved to be William Lawler, a gum-digger, formerly in the 65th regiment. He had tried to drown himself on the previous evening. Dr Philson, health officer, inspected the Te Anau on arrival. Wellington, August 18. This afternoon Sir George Whitmore was sworu in as a Member of the Executive Council without portfolio. At the Supreme Court to-day a libel case Berves v. Anderson, was heard, damages fixed at £3OO. Plaintiff is a butcher residing in Tory street, and defendant a settler. "When proceeding through Tory street in May last, defendant had a dog poisoned, and as the animal was last seen coming out of plaintiff’s shop defendant called out to him, but could get no satisfaction. Anderson subsequently published a letter and advertisement in the evening paper, and it was on these plaintiff claimed. The Jury gave a verdict for plaintiff with £SOO damages. A Guard of Honour has been ordered for to-morrow when the Governor formally opens Parliament. The case of G. Thaine, junr., and the Government Insurance Commissioner, will be taken in the Supreme Court on 26th inst. Dunedin, August 18. The Judges got tlirhugh their duties to-day at the postponed Baby Show. Amongst the happy fathers of prize takers are a doctor and a solicitor. The police have made enquiries regarding the reported existence of small-pox at Balclutha, and find that there are only a few cases of scarlatena.
