NOXIOUS WEEDS
MAUNGATAUTARI FARMS.
MENACE OF GORSE AND BLACKBERRY.
Reporting to the Matamata County Council at the September meeting, Mr. W. J. Logan, inspector of noxious weeds, commented upon the proven efficacy of the lime-sodium mix (51bs sodium to lOOlbs lime), in destroying ragwort and urged farmers to prepare for immediate broadcasting .
Cr. C. H. Latrobe stated that blackberry and gorse were a greater menace than ragwort in his area. He knew of a property on which 120 cows were milked, which now only carried a herd of 60. The speaker disapproved of the policy of putting ex-service-men on partially improved farms when there was gorse. The clerk adfised that a subsidy of £BOO was available from the department.
It was agreed that the inspector should now devote more time to seeing that gorse and blackberry were cleared.
