WORK IN THE BOROUGH

IMPROVEMENTS TO STREETS

TESTING WATER METERS

In his monthly report to the Cambridge Borough Council, the engineer, Mr N. Sanderson, stated that a further six chains of path in Williams Street had been' realigned, chipped and dressed with metal waste, and 240 chains of channels had been cleaned in Alpha, Bryce, Grey, Duke, Lake, Kix-kwood and Victoria streets, and in Hamilton and Thornton roads.

Eighty-seven cubic yards of shingle had been used in repairs to street carriage-ways throughout the borough and the grading plant had been used as far as has been practicable. Sealed carriageways in Bowen, Grosvenor, Lake, Victoria and Queen streets had been repaired. With an improvement in weather conditions, the grading plant had been used to grade Commerce Street in preparation for trimming and base course dressing of the carriageway.

A meter test bench had been installed and faulty supply meters wgre being withdrawn from service for testing and repairs or replacement. It was hoped ,to revise the whole of the urban metering system before the ensuing summer season.

The staff were being further employed in early inspection and attention to repairs and painting of reservoir and water tower had been deferred pending more settled weather. A preliminary survey of the Thornton Rpad outlet and existing drains to McLean and Taylor streets had been made. It was recommended that the question of the costs of replacements of the existing damaged pipe line crossing county lands be investigated with a view to the elimination of the flooding nuisance in the whole of the Robinson, Taylor, McLean streets block.
