Cycle Read Race. Riders in the 100-mile cycle road race from Papakura to Matamata parsed through Cambridge at about 2 p.m. on Saturday. There were 47 starters and 17 finished. The winner was W. R. Walker, of the Manakau Club, while the fastest time was shrs. 7min. 35sec. put up by D. Anstice, of Lynndale Club. Power Board Remits Exchange. A decision to remit all exchange paid on cheques by consumers was made by the Central Waikato Electric Power Board last week. The board felt that people who paid by cheque should not be penalised by having to pay exchange above the cost of their accounts. Accident To Timber Truck. The main highway at Karapiro was strewn with split posts on Saturday morning as the result of an unusual accident near the golf links. It appear that a trailer came adrift from a light vehicle, and a K.M.K. timber lorry travelling in the opposite dii'ection was unable to avoid it although the driver swung his truck round smartly and finally ran off the road, losing his load. Traffic was held up for a few minutes while the road was cleared. Horahora Tennis Opening. A particularly large gathering of tennis players and friends attended the opening day of the Horahora Tennis Club’s courts. The President, Mr Strawbridge, addressed the gathering before declaring the courts open. He then asked his wife to send the first ball over the net. A good afternoon’s play was then' enjoyed by players present. A tournament was won by Mrs La Trobe and Mr Peter Judd. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies.

School Holidays. The 1947' school holiday periods for all primary schools under the authority of the Auckland Education Board were decided at a meeting of the board last week. The first term will open on Monday, February 3, the second term on Tuesday, May 27, the third term on Tuesday, September 9, and the third term will close on Friday, December 19. This proposal allows two days at the discretion of the committees.
