TRAFFIC CONTROL

ACTIVITY IN BOROUGH REPORT OF THE INSPECTOR “Extensive patrol has been carried out covering all streets in the borough,” stated Inspector C. I. Fletcher, of the Transport Department in his report to the monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council last week. “Patrol was extended to a late hour cn five separate evenings. During this reconnaissance not one cyclist was observed without the equipment of his cycle meeting the requirements of the traffic regulations. Double parking in.; .the main street was still causing cpncern, added the Inspector, and it had 'been, decided to take action in two cases where it was evident-that a disregard of the regulations knowingly occurred. Two ccurt cases were also pending for parking on the wrong side of the road for long periods. ■ A further court action was pending for dangerous driving in the main street in Cambridge. This type of inconsideration for other road users would not be tolerated by the Department.

“During the period it has been ticed that a number of local pedestrians are becoming careless again, and in some instances warnings have been issued. It is hoped that their cooperation in the carrying out of the law will be forthcoming before some serious consequences arise out of their somewhat thoughtless actions. A pedestrian has a serious obligation towards the motorist when using the road.”

" The inspector stated that 22 applicants were tested for their licenses and only seven passed the required test. Most of the failures occurred through lack of knowledge of road rules, but since their failures, four had been retested and passed after a creditable performance. Eleven warnings were extended to motor drivers for simple breaches and nine pedestrians were cautioned for jay walking, “Some very favourable remarks were passed on to me by a city visitor as to the clear way in which motor drivers give their signals in Cambridge,” concluded the inspector. “This I would like passed on to the motoring public with my congratulations. A visitor generally is a fair critic.”
