SEALING OF ROADS

LEAMINGTON TOWN DISTRICT APPOINTMENT OF ENGINEER The proposal to tar-seal the main highways in the Leamington Toy, a Board’s area was discussed at the monthly meeting of the board last evening, when it was decided to appoint Mr W. McKenzie Jeffrey, of Cambridge, as consulting engineer, to draw up an estimate of the cost. It will be necessary for the ratepayers to give approval to the raising of a loan for the purpose, but the chairman, Mr J. W. Garland, considered that there should be no objection as the Public Works Department would provide a subsidy of £3 for every £1 spent by the board. The main highway extends through Leamington from the boundary at Mr J. Tucker’s property to the other boundary near Mr J. W. Garland’s residence. The board also intends to secure estimates of the cost of sealing Browning Street, from where the main highway ends at Carlyle Street, to Miss Norton’s property, to join the Waipa County sealing, and the whole length of Shakespeare Street from Browning Street to Lamb Street. In connection with the suggestion that it is the intention of the Government to take the control and licensing of taxis out of the hands of local bodies, the Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote asking if the board had any by-laws at present dealing with the control and licensing of taxi-cabs and town carriers. The board decided to reply that it had no by-laws, dealing with taxis and carriers, and it was not intended that any be passed. The board decided to support in any way possible, the Mayor of Auckland’s appeal for recruits for the territorial army. The chairman stated that there was little that the board could do of a practical nature. The board decided to make a grant of £1 1/- to the funds of the Cambridge Branch of the St. John Ambulance Association..

Concern at the recent estimates for the current year, approved by the Waikato Hospital Board, which involve a levy of £62,549 on the contributing local authorities, compared with £44,238 last year, was expressed in a communication from the Waikato County Council. It was stated that a meeting of representatives of all contributory local bodies in the Waikato Hospital District would be held in Hamilton next Tuesday, to discuss the matter and to take such action as might appear desirable. The council requested that the board arrange for a representative to be present, and the chairman was delegated to attend the meeting.
