THE MELBOURNE CUP.

GREAT EVENT TODAY.

The sporting event that can lay claim to attracting the most interest in the Southern Hemisphere is being run today at Flemington—the Melbourne Cup. New Zealand's interest in the big event is more intense than, usual in view of the fact that the two leading favourites, Phar Lap and Nightmarch, have been bred in the Dominion. Nightmarch has a fine performance list behind him, while Phar Lap has performed brilliantly just recently, his Derby win on Saturday last being a fine effort. To date the Melbourne Cup has been contested 68 times. In the 68 contests that have eventuated for the Cup the three-year-old division tops tho-Jist with 20 wins. The five-year-olds come next with 18 successes, the four-year-olds following with 15 wins. The six-year-olds have scored 10 wins, and the "aged" division five wins.

The fastest record for the Cup is 3m 2235. Windbag (9.2) and Spcarfelt (9.3) the respective winners in 1925 and 1926 are the two horses responsible for the time record.

'The Cup Field. The field for to-day's Melbourne Cup is composed as follows: — High Syce (inc. 101 b penalty), 9.11; Winalot, 9.5; Nightmarch, 9.2; Kidaides, 8.7; Paquito, 8.5; Second Wind, 8.4; Some Quality, 8.1; Sea Money, 7.7; Demost, 7.6; Phar Lap (inc. 81b penalty), 7.6; Carradale, 7.5; Shadow King, 7.4; Lady Kentrel, 7.2; Taisho, 6.11.
