THE WHITEHALL CLUB. OPENING OF SEASON. (Own Correspondent). Favoured with ideal weather conditions tho Whitehall Club officially opened the season on Saturday last. There was a good attendance of members and friends, the Karapiro Club members attending in full force. The courts were in good playing order, and everyone had a most enjoyable afternoon. The ladies of Whitehall with their characteristic thoroughness, provided afternoon tea, which the happy players did full justice to. Mr J. W. Jeans (president), in welcoming the visitors, thanked the Karapiro Club for turning up in force. Their presence had added much to the pleasure and success of the opening day, and he hoped that if, during the season, the Whitehall Club did not grow vigorously enough to meet them in combat that they would, whenever opportunity offered, pay a visit to'Whitehall, and help to keep the club alive. Five years ago, said Mr Jeans, they had started a club in Whitehall, and ever since had carried on, not without difficulty, but this year their membership had been greatly reduced. They were few in numbers, but he trusted that the members would do their utmost to induce new members to join the club, and thus keep the good old sport going for a few more years, until it could be carried on by their children. (Applause). Mr R. Robson, president of the Karapiro Club), on behalf of the visitors, thanked tho members of the Whitehall Club for the hearty welcome which their president had given them, and for a most enjoyable afternoon. He wished the club a most enjoyable season. CAMBRIDGE CLUB. There was a very large attendance at the local courts on Saturday afternoon. The eight courts were kept going all the afternoon, and even then players had to wait for some time for their turns. It is very evident that the club will have a large membership—probably a record ■ —and a very successful season. Ladder Matches. Latter matches have commenced in earnest. On Saturday last Entwisle (challenger) was defeated by Watson, after a close contest, 6 —4, 4 —6, 4—6. A number of challenges have been made, and these matches will be followed with interest.
