POLO

THE MATANGI CLUB.

OFFICIAL OPENING.

The Matangi Polo Club opened their season on Saturday under very pleasant weather conditions, and a good crowd of enthusiasts turned out to watch the play.

The polo field presents a very much improved appearance, and what was, at the 1928 tourney, a dusty thinly-grassed ground is now a green well-bottomed sward which should stand hard play later in the summer. The club has also improved tho stand and appointments, and has lately made a new entrance to its ground. On Saturday an adjoining paddock was used in order to save the club's ground. Matangi is fortunate in possessing two loyal supporters in Messrs A. Miller, a past president, and V. Chitty, the club captain. These gentlemen helped the club very considerably when it was first started, and have now made it possible for Matangi to purchase its own playing ground. Visiting players were present from all the active clubs in the Auckland province; two from the newly formed club at Whangarei,. six from Waimai, two from Waihou and ten from Cambridge. Many enjoyable chukkors were played. To horse lovers the most pleasing feature of the day was the splendid array of ponies, and there were some very fine ones" on the lines. Every year sees an improvement in this direction, and it is rather wonderful in these days where they all come from.

The ladies, as usual, provided a most enjoyable afternoon tea, and the secretary, Mr W. Eanstcad, worked hard to ensure the. enjoyment of the visiting players.

On Saturday next the Waimai Club opens its season at To Akau, and on the 23rd the local club will hold its opening on Beer's paddock.
