AN ACCIDENT

ON HAMILTON ROAD.

MRS INNES TAYLOR INJURED., A most unfortunate accident occurs red on the Hamilton Road, Cambridge, ,jq on Sunday evening, as the result of, which Mrs Innes Taylor sustained a broken left ankle. It appears, that about 7.30 p.m., Mrs Taylor and her children were walking on the side of the road towards their home from the direction of Cambridge. When they were about 50 yards from their gate two cars with lights full on entered this straight portion of the road from the direction of Cambridge, while Mr W. Nan, of Cambridge, was at the same time approaching from the opposite direction. Apparently the pedestrians' attention was taken up by the cars at the back of them, and they did not observe Mr Nan's car until it ' was close upon them. It was dusk at the time, and with the lights of the oncoming cars full on Mr Nan did not observe the pedestrians until he was right, upon them. He had dimmed his lights and just then made out the forms of persons on the road. The oncoming- cars were by now at close range, but with, fortunate presence of mind Mr Nan swerved slightly towards the ipentre of the road in an endeavour to avoid running into the pedestrians. The sudden appearance of Mr Nan's car apparently : a frightened Mrs Taylor, and as she denly moved round the back wheel of r the vehicle went over her left leg, . throwing her to the ground. Fortunately Mr Nan, who was accompanied by his wife and children, was travelling slowly at the time, having eased up to pass the other cars. At first Mr Nan thought he had passed the pedestrians safely, but Mrs Nan fancied she saw the woman fall ,and the car was promptly pulled up. It was immediately seen that Mrs Taylor was injured, and she was taken to her home. Dr Ritchie was communicated with and was quickly in attendance, Mrs Taylor being taken to the Whitiora private hospital, where it was found the injured woman had sustained a broken ankle bone. .-'■•,.■•• -v-

The accident was a most regrettable one, but viewing all the circumstances it is fortunate that a much more serious affair is not being reported, for. when Mr Nan swerved his car into the road, he narrowly missed a collision with the first of the oncoming cars.,The fact that Mr Nan did not observe ;tlfe~!ii pedestrians was due to his being daz-. d zled with the lights of the other two vS cars, which were full on all the time, The drivers and occupants of these ve- rf hides apparently did not observe the *„ accident, as they continued on their crjsjjs way. " .

Apart from the injury to her ankle Mrs Taylor was not otherwise hurt, although she suffered rather severely from, shock.

On inquiry we were informed that Mrs Taylor is progressing as well as can be expected.
