DISORDER IN NANKING Japanese Open fire. - SWEEP STREETS WITH MACHINEGUNS. (By Cable —Press Association) , (Received 11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, April $ Simultaneously with the departure of Chiang Kai-shek, commander of .lift Southorn arniy,' from Nanking, guerilla forces again became active. They sniped and wounded a Japanese marine. Immediately a large force of Japan' ese marines took possession of tit# streets, with orders to shoot anything* seen moving. As sporadic sniping continued tb* Japanese commander ordered the jnar j ines to advance after sweeping fh& streets with Lewis guns. The Chinese guerilla forces rallied and a short-pitched battle followed. Then the attackers escaped in a of alleyways. Early next morning a second street battle occurred, but Japanese marines drove off the attackers, who were Cantoneso soldiers. LORD MAYOR IN TROUBLE. TOO MUCH POMP AND SPLENDOUR. TRADES UNION OFFENDED. (By Cable —Press Association). SYDNEY, April 7. The Lord Mayor, Mr Mostyn, who is also assistant-secretary of the Eleetrical Trades Union, has been suspended bv the organisation from the latter office for welcoming the Duke andDuchess of York with all the pomp and splendour of medieval ages, and in defiance of a mandate from the Traded and Labour Council. A PREMATURE REPORT. 1 MATTER DEFERRED. A later cable states that the president of the Electrical Trades Union" states that the Lord Mayor has not been suspended from the assistant - secretaryship. A motkm in favour ofhis suspension was, moved, bbt the president ruled that, as the motion involved serious and drastic action against au official, notice would have to be given before the matter could'be decided. It therefore stands as a notice of motion for discussion at the next monthly meeting. _ A SENSATIONAL SCENE. IN LONDON POLICE COURT. EX-SOLDIER STABBED, " (By Cable —Press Association). : LONDON, April 8. There was a sensational scene in theSouth Police Court when Edward Wilson, a Canadian ex-soldier, had just been lined £2 for stealing a pair of boots and a razor belonging to Williata Salmon, with whom he was lodging. Instantly Salmon rushed into the dock, exclaimed, "Ha, got you!and stabbed Wilson in the back with a dagger. Women shrieked and ' Salmon reeled and fell. The police grabbed him and a few minutes later he appeared in the dock charged with the attempted murder of Wilson, who wan seriously injured.
