CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCESHEET. The annual meeting of the above will be held on Tuesday evening next, at 8 o’clock, when the following report of the committee and balance-sheet for the year ending 31st December, 1905, will be presented:— Your committee have pleasure in again meeting the members and subscribers of the above institution, and submitting a statement of income and expenditure, together with assets and liabilities. The general assets, after allowing the usual 5 per cent for depreciation on the books, amounts to the sum of £720 18s 6d; and the new building fund now stands at £54 17s 4d. The Government subsidy for the year amounts to £l7 4s 9d, the maximum sum receivable by any library in New Zealand, and application has been made for it. During the year your committee expended £59 13s Id on new books, which far exceeds any previous year’s expenditure in this direction, the committee always keeping the library thoroughly up-to-date in all the newest books, a policy which we arc pleased to say meets with the approval and appreciation of the subscribers and visitors to the library. The warmest thanks of the committee are extended to the ladies of Cambridge for their efforts in promoting and carrying out a Library Ball to augment the new building fund and, notwithstanding the inclemancy of the weather, it was a brilliant success. We trust the ladies will see their way to make an annual effort to assist this fund. During the year the building has been re-painted and repaired, and is now in good order as far as old buildings go; we trust, however, the time is not far distant when a new building will be erected on the present site, which will be a credit to our town and district. In conclusion, we would again commend the institution to the favourable support of the surrounding country settlers and the residents of Cambridge.—For the committee, George Dickinson, Chairman.
