Singular circumstances attended the suicide at Decpear, near Sheffield, of George Andrew Eastham, a young Sunday school teacher. He left his house, leading his dog by a chain, and with this chain he subsequently hanged himself. When his body was found hanging from a bridge, the animal was standing beneath it, howling and doing its best to attract attention. The dog, it is said, returned to Eastham’s house on Friday night, and was heai d barking for a considerable period. Failing, however, to arouse any one, it apparently returned to guard its master’s body. London includes in its population 169,300 girls aged from ten to fourteen years, and of those nearly 2400 are engaged in various occupations.
