He left his house, leading his dog by a chain, and with this chain he subsequently hanged himself. When his body was found hanging from a bridge, the animal was standing beneath it, howling and doing its best to attract attention. The dog, it is said, returned to Eastham’s house on Friday night, and was heai d barking for a considerable period. Failing, however, to arouse any one, it apparently returned to guard its master’s body.
