WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeing of the Waipa County Council was held at the Council Chambers, Ohaupo, yesterday. There were present: Crs Fisher, chairman, Allen, Finch, Macky, Poynter, Ityburn, Hall, Teasdale and McKinder. Supervisor’s Report. The supervisor’s report was read as follows: —

The season having been an unusually fine one up to within the last few days, the roads generally have kept in much better condition than they ordinarily are at this time of year. We have al 30 been enabled to overtake a lot of work that was behind hand. Metalling: Unfortunately the above does not apply to metalling, as supplies of metal have come forward very slowly indeed. On the FranktonWhatawhata and Frankton-Tuhikara-mea roads, ttrs work is now stopped for the season. On the latter road, the work proposed to be done, has been completed; while on the Whatavvhata road there still remains about ten chains of what was proposed, not done. This particular part of the road is not likely to become very bad. having been previously gravelled. On the Hamilton-Ohaupo road, the metalling ordered near Mel- ] ville’s is in progress, while that on the Cemetery hill, near Ohaupo, is not commenced. Both these jobs have been delayed in order that those works might first be got out of hand, where the metal had to be carted a considerable distance over soft roads. Rukuhia 'station road work has made hut little progress, as the metal was not forthcoming. Less than half the work intended has been done, and I think that it would be beat to stop all further work on this road until next season. The gravelling with local material which was authorised on this road, and also on the main road, towards Hamilton, has got on much better, and although not finished a goid proportion of the work has been done by Messrs Raynes and Turner. Also, further along the main road in the Hamilton direction, a considerable amount of sanding has been done by T. Tebbs. Te Rapa-Te Kowhai road: The work intended to be done on this road is completed, with the exception of a short section, which should have been gravelled. This has not been done owing to the land from which it was intended to get the gravel having been sold. This again brings up the question of obtaining another site for a gravel pit, and I think that the sooner some definite action is taken in the matter the better it would be. Works complete: A contract for gravelling Tapp’s hill, near Frankton, is completed; also, a contract for cleaning a drain on the Whatawhata road, let to Barry Bros. The bridge over the Mangahoe, on the new road at Rangiaohia has been erected by C. Drabble, and is a good job. Work on this road is now practically completed with the exception of the fencing. The same contractor (Drabble) has also in hand the work of raising and repairing the bridge at Heather’s creek, Tuhikaramea. Road between Faterangi and Innesfallen; Arrangements have been made with Messrs Reilly Bros, to put this job through. Ohaupo-Cambridge road: Repairing work has been let to C. Teddy, J. T. Muir and Wm. Eastwood, the last named has also the gravelling of Shakespeare street, Leamington, in hand.

Government grants: Shortly after the last meeting an intimation was received from the department that should the council propose asking for any grants-in-aid, this year, an early application was advisable. After consultation with the chairman, I accordingly forwarded a letter asking assistance towards Pirongia bridge, Whatawhata swamp road, Rukuhia station road, and the Kihi-kihi-Waotu road. Te Awamutu station road: Plans and specifications of work proposed on this road have been prepared and forwarded to the department for approval. The supervisor’s action in stopping the various metalling works was approve!
