Raglan.

The nice warm rain which set in last Thursday was a pleasant change from the continual dry weather of the past few weeks, and already it has given a fresh impulse to both pastures and crops. Late sown oats and potatoes were in especial need of rain.

The reading room at Raglan which has been started in temporary quarters, is greatly appreciated by members.

Mr H. G. Cox, inspector of schools, who has visited the various district schools, has reported favourably thereon.

A dinner was tendered Mr Edmonds, ex-councillor for the Whaingaroa Riding, by his friends and supporters on Saturday last at the Harbour View Hotel, when Mr Bankart occupied the chair. Dc. Sanders, in a felicitous speech proposed the "Pioneer Settlers" coupled with the names of Messrs T. B. Hill and S. Picken, who replied in a humorous strain. In giving the toast of the guest of the evening, Mr W. M. Bankart also made a presentation on behalf of those present of a handsome pair of field glasses, speaking in the highest terms of Mr Edmonds as a colleague in the council and as : i personal friend. Mr Edmonds suitably replied. Mr A. L. Pegler proposed "The Local Bodies- The Raglan County Council and Raglan Town Board," coupled with the names of their respective chairmen, Messrs Basil Hewett and W. J. Smith, who responded. Mr Hewett proposed the "Roads and Bridges and Survey Departments," coupled with the names of Messrs Burd and J. B. Thomp:>on. Mr I']. H. Schnakenberg proposed "The Agricultural and Pastoral Association," coupled with the names of Messrs W. M. Bankart, A. L. Pegler and F. Bull. The remaining toasts were: "Education," "The Press," and "The Chairman."

Sheepowners here are exultant at the recent buoyant tendency of the wool market. A rise of even a penny per lb in that staple would make a great difference to the revenue of this country.—Own Correspondent.
